Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits are artists working with various digital media. They are key founders of RIXC the Center for Art and Science located in Riga.

DEEP SENSING
Immersive experience visualising and sonifying Solar radiation, Ionosphere activities and their interrelationship with the earth's climate.

ATMOSPHERIC FOREST
Immersive installation visualizing the complex relations between a forest, climate change, and the atmosphere.

FLUCTUATIONS OF MICROWORLDS
Generative audiovisual installation. 360° video and data visualization in VR. Time lapse video. Data sculpture. Digital prints/object.

Media art installation consisting of five interrelated works which are part of art and science research project that explores local ecosystems for envisioning renewable future scenarios, by reconsidering our relations with nature and technology, biological and social systems, human and microorganism worlds.

POND BATTERY. A Poetics of Green Energy
Time lapse video (10 min.)

Pond Battery, Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits

Pond Battery video visualises the electrical energy generated by MFC (Microbial Fuel Cell) in outdoor conditions during seven month time period from September 2014 to March 2015. Work is a part of Biotricity project series an ongoing art and science research project, exploring dynamics of local ecosystems for envisioning the renewable future networks.

Pond Battery. Fluctuations of Microworlds, Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits

Recorded Internet camera images and data from the fuel cell monitoring during the seven month long observation period are now interpreted into time lapse video, complemented by a sound composition.

BIOTRICITY
Realtime visualisation and sonification of bio energy

Biotricity, Rasa Smite & Raitis Smits

The installation consists of a double cell “bacteria battery”, where the electricity is generated by micro-organisms living in a mud. The fluctuation of bacteria electricity is interpreted into realtime two channel sound. Simultaneously, the video on the screen is manipulated by the live sound and interpreted into realtime glitch visualisations. The installation is complemented by digital prints with the electronic microscope images showing the bacteria environment in different scales.

TALK TO ME
Human – Plant Communication Project

TalkToMe

Talk to Me is an artistic inquiry into human and plant communication, yet also scientists have nowadays performed various experiments in order to verify the old assumption that communication with plants makes them grow better. RIXC artists developed a human-plant communication interface which lets people send messages to the growing plants in different exhibition venues equipped with Internet camera, loudspeaker and wi-fi.

Collected materials (text messages and camera images) from several locations in in Tallinn, Basel, Riga and Ventspils were analysed and interpreted in a form of word cloud, most frequently used word map and time lapse video of growing plants.

The outcome of this project is a book, which introduces to the project idea, performed experiments, and analysis the content of the received messages.
